Glen Park is a walking park in Williamsville, New York. It isbordered by the Glen Falls waterfall that flows along Ellicott Creek,and the inactive Williamsville Water Mill.

History

The location originally housed an amusement park, Harry Altman'sGlen Park Casino and Amusement Park.^[1]

The property was razed following two fires. The first fire inSeptember 1968 destroyed a nightclub on the property called TheInferno. The Inferno was formerly the 'Glen Casino'. Thenightclub was notable for featuring the bands Wilmer& the Dukes and Raven (formerly Tony Galla andthe Rising Sons) on a weekly basis, which helped launch theircareers. In addition, national recording acts such as Junior Walker& the All Stars, The Butterfield Blues Band, Sly and the FamilyStone, Ike & Tina Turner, The Bob Seger System, The Esquires,Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Wilson Pickett, Wayne Cochran& the CC Riders, and Arthur Conley also played this famousnightclub.

The second fire in September 1973 destroyed several buildings,including the lower building called the 'Underground'. Altman, hisson-in-law Dave Goldstein and grandson Steve Goldstein had hostedmany famous entertainers at the Glen Casino over theyears, including Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra Jr., JayneMansfield, Dick Shawn, Joey Bishop, Jerry Vale, The Three Stooges,and the Mills Brothers. The Casino was built in the 1940sand housed both a theater and a restaurant. In 1966, Kevin Elliott,a local promoter, sold Harry Altman the idea to convert thenightclub into a rock 'n roll venue. It was also the springboard,for the Inferno house band, named the Rising Sons. This local groupfeaturing Tony Galla on vocals, Jim Calire on piano, John Weitzlead guitar, Tommy Calandra on bass guitar, Gary Mallaber ondrums, became national recording artists known as Raven managed bymusic executive, MartyAngelo. The Raven recorded a live album entitled, 'Live at theInferno' which was later released in 1969. The front cover of thealbum is a photo of the fire-razed nightspot.

In 1976, the park was converted to its current state with theinstallation of several ponds and concrete walking paths.^[2] It hassince been owned and maintained jointly by the Village ofWilliamsville and the Town of Amherst.

The Glen has played a prominent part in the part in the rich history of the Village of Williamsville. Over the years, the Glen has lent its name to such landmarks as the Glen Park Casino and Williamsville’s only Amusement Park. Today, the park remains a popular spot for family outings, romantic strolls, and is a splendid setting for wedding party photographs. The Glen Park Tavern is proud to build on its established legacy as the historical cornerstone of the Village of Williamsville. Historical Glen-Park-Tavern The hamlet first adopted the name of “William’s Mills,” after Jonas Williams, who constructed a rough mill on the East bank of Ellicott Creek in 1811. Williams abandoned the East bank mill to erect one on the West bank, which remains in operation today. A military garrison during the War of 1812. “Williams Mills” would thereafter become know as Williamsville. The Williamsville Post Office would be instituted for the growing settlement in 1823, and Williamsville would be officially incorporated in 1850. Today it remains the only incorporated village in the Town of Amherst.
